Curriculum and Instruction

Academics is a top priority for Barbour County Schools. Educators and administrative leaders within Barbour County Schools work collaboratively to create a student-centered environment that fosters academic growth by providing content-rich learning experiences. The curriculum in BCS promotes the development of all of our students and is based on a program of instruction in academic, technical subjects, fine arts, vocational/technical skills, citizenship, cultural development, and enhancement of moral and spiritual values. By promoting excellence and employing highly effective teachers, the environment at each school will allow our students to be successful as they continue their educational journey into their post-secondary plans. BCS strives to create lifelong learners who are contributing citizens in an ever-changing world. Our goal is for our students to be prepared whether they seek a higher education, enlist in the military, or join the workforce.
The BCS curriculum is determined by the Alabama State Department of Education Courses of Study, objectives and standards for state assessments, students’ needs and interests, regular evaluation of curriculum effectiveness, and Alabama statutes, State Board of Education rules, and policies of the Barbour County Board of Education.  The Curriculum and Instruction department emphasizes sound, researched and evidence-based practices to ensure learning is relevant and that our students are prepared for 21st century challenges.
BCS is proud to partner with the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI), Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI), Alabama Technology in Motion, ACCESS Distance Learning, A+College Ready, Alabama Best Practices Center, iReady, IXL, and many more.
