Health & Wellness

Welcome to the department of health services in Barbour County Schools. We strive to keep children healthy, in school, and ready to learn. The school nurses help in doing this by providing episodic care, managing chronic conditions, tracking communicable diseases, promoting healthy behaviors, connecting children with healthcare resources, and handling medical emergencies.  Please contact the school nurse if we need to be aware of health concerns that impact your child while he/she is at school.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I keep my child at home?

  • Fever:

If your child has temperature 100 degrees or higher, they should stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without taking fever reducing medications. Children should be fever free 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Vomiting:

If your child has vomited during the night, they should stay home. A bus or car ride can be difficult for a child. Your child should be able to eat and retain regular food before returning to school. If your child has diarrhea, these same guidelines apply. There should be no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Sore Throat:

If your child has a sore throat and a fever, be sure to keep your child home. This will decrease the spread of the virus throughout the school. If your child is experiencing swollen glands or patches on the back of the throat, have them seen by a doctor.

  • Strep Throat:

Strep throat is very serious and is treated with antibiotics. Complications can occur if not treated. Children on antibiotics should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Conjunctivitis - "Pink Eye":

It can easily be spread by contact from rubbing eyes, tears, coughing or sneezing. Symptoms include: redness, itching, scratchy feeling, eyelids sticking/crusting together especially in the morning, and swelling of the eyelids. Always wash your hands should you suspect your child has pink eye, as it will decrease the risk of contamination of other family members. Your child should remain home, and complete a 24 hour cycle of medication before returning to school.
